Empowering Women through Education

EcoTraining empowers women through education

Being the oldest guide training school in Southern Africa, we boast a rich history of offering employment opportunities, particularly to women from the surrounding communities. – due to our well-established & longstanding relationship with many of Africa’s top game reserves.

Our Managing Director, Anton Lategan, emphasizes the importance of community training, stating, “Our community training empowers community members to participate and lead in the industry. To address important economic and social factors, these young community members are the future leaders who will shape our politics, economy, and businesses.”

“We have many career and online courses available to international and local students. Learning about nature doesn’t even have to take place in the bush. Students can easily access our online courses, making education more accessible to anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of the natural world,” said Lategan.

A ground-breaking initiative

In November 2021, we embarked on a ground-breaking initiative in collaboration with The African Bush Camps Foundation. This initiative specifically addresses women’s entry barriers in the male-dominated guiding industry. The Female Nature Guide Training Program offers full scholarship training at institutions like EcoTraining’s Botswana camp and a two-year experiential learning contract within the African Bush Camps. The program is dedicated to increasing the number of women in the guiding field, creating a more balanced and inclusive industry. It also strives to impact positively, developing a diverse and empowered community of women in the guiding profession.

Since its inception, the Female Nature Guide Training Program has sponsored eight women to become professional safari guides; this transformative initiative represents a noteworthy milestone in breaking down traditional gender barriers that have persisted in the guiding profession. Notably, three participants underwent training at EcoTraining’s Mashatu camp in Botswana towards the end of 2023, further solidifying the program’s impact.

The power of education

We will remain committed to sustainable education and empowerment, recognizing that education is the cornerstone for peace, development, and equality. As the organization continues contributing to transforming education, it calls on the global community to create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Lessons that Transcend the Floodplain
