What to expect from the 7-day Birding in the Bush Course
Frequent activities in a pristine environment
This course is an exceptional opportunity for anyone interested in birding. You will be based at a camp located in prime wildlife areas, and participate in wilderness walks or game drives twice a day, providing you with frequent practical activities in a pristine environment. This comprehensive course covers a range of subjects, including evolution, anatomy and physiology, habitats and environments, bird identification, bird behaviour and ethics.
Experienced instructors
Not only will you improve your bird identification skills, but you will also enjoy the process of birding itself. EcoTraining’s experienced instructors will guide you through the course, helping you to discover the beauty and wonder of birdlife in a way that will leave you feeling enriched and inspired.

The 7-day Birding in the Bush Course is generally held at Makuleke EcoTraining wilderness camp in the Kruger National Park.

This list helps you become thoroughly familiar with the species you already know and acquainted with species that are new to you.
Read up on the species you already know. That way, you gain the specialist knowledge you can impart to others, bringing the species to life in a way that will fascinate them.
To become a birder, you don’t need to start with fancy, expensive equipment or books. You require your eyes, hearing and a decent foundation of understanding.

What you can expect to graduate with
- The skills to be able to identify different species of birds
- A deeper understanding of bird behaviour and habitats
- All course participants receive an EcoTraining certificate of participation.
Entry level requirements
- The learner needs to be able to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
- Participants need to be 16 years of age and older unaccompanied by an adult. 12–15 years of age must be accompanied by a guardian or parent.
- Fit and able to walk for at least 2km.
